  • Book Condition & Notes

Very good first edition, with slight bruising to spine. A small section of the finish to the top board near the back corner has been worn away, exposing the board beneath. Very small indent to top of front board. Light foxing to bottom of page block. In a very good unclipped dust jacket, with some slight chipping to spine, and small tear to both front and back cover. Some wear to corners, and some browning to light surfaces. All together, a very nice and collectible version of this work by Wells.

About the book

In the months following his wife's death, Mr. Preemby, a retired laundryman becomes convinced that he is the incarnation of Sargon, the ancient king of Sumeria, returned to save a world upturned by the First World War. Trying to make sense of Mr Preemby is his stepdaughter, Christina Alberta. A masterclass in comic invention, Christina Alberta's Father depicts characters who long for something to believe in, just so long as it is not 'some horrible Utopia by Wells', but whose attempts to change the world are always doomed to disappointment. Whether taken as a social satire, a psychological study or a critique of Wells's own beliefs and relationships, Christina Alberta's Father makes for a fascinating and delightful read.

About the Author

H. G. Wells

Herbert George Wells was an English writer. Prolific in many genres, he wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography and autobiography. His work also included two books on recreational war games. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called the "father of science fiction", along with Jules Verne and the publisher Hugo Gernsback.

Wells rendered his works convincing by instilling commonplace detail alongside a single extraordinary assumption – dubbed “Wells's law” – leading Joseph Conrad to hail him in 1898 as "O Realist of the Fantastic!". His most notable science fiction works include The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The War of the Worlds and the military science fiction The War in the Air. Wells was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times.
